Repowering

The replacement of a power generation system by a new one with better performances or different technical characteristics that enhance the attractiveness of the scheme is called “repowering”.

In the field of distributed generation, repowering is a solution more effective because schemes are small, transaction and decommissioning costs are high, conversion potential greater and opportunities easier to address. Therefore, distributed generation schemes of mature technologies such as onshore wind, CHP and landfill gas are likely to be regularly repowered. EA Technology has the capability to assist owners and investors in ageing technology based projects to harvest the full potential of their assets.

In order to address theses issues, we can establish the synergies between the actual status of the assets, the potential of new technologies and the existing network. We are therefore able to determine the level of performance, compatibility, timing opportunity and regulatory compliance of the implementation in order to maximize the economics of the project. (CBRM)

Our field of activities includes:

  • Onshore wind new generation of turbines, with greater size and better generation performances in order to allow upgrading sites potentially requesting fewer turbines (lower OPEX) while keeping in place the existing infrastructure (higher CAPEX). In the past few years for instance, many first generation turbines have disappeared, leaving space for smarter generators. This trend will mechanically increase with the ageing of existing wind farms in the UK.
  • Integration of alternative fuel alongside and/or in replacement of existing landfill gas. As the amount of resources depletes in a waste based project, assets might be driven harder if a cost effective alternative such as biomass is implemented. By extending the remaining life of the scheme, it will reduce tremendously the CAPEX per unit of energy produced, thus leading to better return and reduced risk.
  • Transformation of conventional CHP schemes with biomass from various nature (crops, wood, waste etc…). As theses types of fuel are eligible for ROCs and renewable energy development capital grants, it will reduce CAPEX while increasing the income per unit of energy. We have full capability to establish the type of fuel, supply roads, assets modification, optimal thermal and electrical output as well as its distribution to customers.
