EA Technology offers comprehensive technical
support services and consultancy to owners and
operators of overhead lines operating from low
voltage, up to 132kV and beyond. Working with
clients, EA Technology is able to help develop
strategies, formulate policy, through to fault
analysis, line design, training and documentation.
We have developed Condition Based Risk ManagementTM
(CBRM) to enable cost-effective asset management.
Our services range include:
- Design analysis
- New Technology evaluation and implementation
- Condition Assessment
- Remnant Life Estimation
- Effective Asset Management
- Performance evaluation
- Post fault investigation
- Documentation
- Training and development
- Forums and seminars for overhead line engineers
- Line design
- Measurements of line and equipment emissions
- Live line working

Design analysis:
A 'Design Analysis' provided by EA
Technology can provide the asset owner with information
about the reliability of overhead lines in a given location.
This is achieved by identifying any weak points and
suggesting cost-effective solutions to reduce the risk
of failure.
"New Technology" evaluation
and implementation
Innovative processes and developments
are continuously appearing. EA Technology have the expertise
necessary to evaluate these systems and provide guidance
and recommendations about their implementation and possible
benefits to the industry.
Condition Assessment, Remnant Life
Estimation and Effective Asset Management
Drawing upon a detailed understanding
of degradation processes and practical experience of
condition assessment procedures, EA Technology can offer
a wide range of services both to assess the current
condition and to make realistic estimates of the remnant
life for individual components or complete overhead
line systems.
Such information can provide the basis
for formulating asset management procedures including
cost-effective inspection and maintenance procedures
and refurbishment or replacement strategies.
| Condition assessment of the paint
on towers as well as foundation testing for corrosion
and resistance measurement are available to give
your towers the full 'MOT' to determine their economic
remnant life. For example: a review of condition
information for 132kV lines was carried out for
a utility leading to the development of a condition
assessment policy as part of an overall asset management
strategy. |
Performance
Evaluation:
By interrogating historical data relating
to faults, customer minutes lost, planned interruptions,
restoration times etc., it is possible to specifically
identify issues relating to system performance. A 'statistical
analysis' carried out by EA Technology can therefore
address client's requirements efficiently in a clear
and understandable manner.
In addition to operating the UK lightning
location service, EA Technology has particular expertise
in the specification, design and implementation of lightning
protection systems tailored to specific customer requirements.
|
Post Fault Investigation:
An independent investigation
into overhead component and design failure is
available from EA Technology. Reasons for failure,
along with recommendations concerning the prevention
of future failures can be provided.

Documentation Services
EA Technology has significant
experience in providing a range of technical documentation
services. With particular reference to overhead
line associated services, the documentation available
covers line design specifications (deterministic
or probabilistic), material specifications, transmission
and distribution policy and standards, technical
requirements and construction methodology incorporating
risk assessment. A particular attribute of our
documentation team is their ability to tailor
documentation material to meet the requirements
of each client.
As part of this service
a risk analysis can be performed on the basis
of historical and projected performance and
changes to be made. Typically this can provide
cost-effective lightning protection policies
focused to your level of security required,
the equipment and local lightning intensity.

Training and Development
A series of short courses on electricity
distribution engineering are available to meet the needs
of engineering professionals working within the electricity
supply industry and related fields.
The courses all cover areas of significant
technological change, where the technical options and
problems encountered by today's engineer are very different
from those of only a few years ago.
Forums and Seminars
EA Technology holds regular Overhead
Line Forums where new developments in the field can
be drawn to the attention of Overhead Line Engineers
from the UK utilities. We also offer seminars on specific
issues or equipment for manufacturers to demonstrate
their products in a cost-effective and focused manner
to the appropriate customers.
Measurement of Line and Equipment
Emissions
EA Technology provides a full measurement
service to determine EMF, RF (radio frequency) and PD
(partial discharge) emissions of conductors, substations
and other equipment to determine whether these are within
current or draft UK, European or other standards. Resistivity
and resistance measurements are also available to aid
earthing requirements and lightning risk assessments,
e.g. determination of ROEP (rise of earth potential),
step or touch potentials for health and safety issues.
Live Line Working
EA Technology can provide testing
for live line tools and equipment as well as provision
of expert advice and training.
Line Design
The provision of new and innovative
overhead line designs are available from EA Technology.
These designs will address client requirements by providing
cost effective solutions that improves system performance
and reliability. By working closely with the client's
staff, an implementation process can also be provided
by EA Technology. In this way, the introduction of new
overhead line specifications, procurement of materials,
training and auditing can be introduced in a clear and
understandable manner.
Covered Conductors
EA Technology is the leading European
company in the field of covered conductor (CC) expertise.
All aspects of CC use have been investigated and defined,
including involvement with the UK and European CC Standards
for line design, fittings and conductor tests. New developments
in CC including fully insulated systems, space cable
and operation up to 132kV have been covered by EA Technology.
11kV Line Performance
Evaluation of 11kV line performance
leading to consideration of options for:
- refurbishment
- alternative network configurations
- improved protection systems
- adoption of 'novel' materials
- improved lightning protection
What is CBRM?
A structured process to turn asset
management aspirations into realities. It optimises
maintenance, refurbishment and replacement programme's,
maximises life extension and increases utilisation
of existing assets based on their present condition
and required future performance
It uses information on current condition
linked to an understanding of degradation and failure
processes to identify and implement specific asset
management programme's and uses targeted information
gathering to enable specific decisions. It uses a Step
by Step Approach:
- Establish
the background position
- Asset Management
Strategy to identify
significant opportunities
- Planning
- Collate and qualify existing
information and plan targeted programme to collect
additional information
- Implementation
- Undertake programme to gather specific information
- structured, quality assured procedures
- Use of Results
- Optimise maintenance, refurbishment or replacement
based on actual condition and future performance
- Review
- Feedback into AM strategy and business aims
Benefits
Working with EA Technology can benefit
utilities, manufacturers, suppliers and other companies
