Oil Handling Course

Dates:

14th October 2010

This course will cover:

• Oil analysis interpretation
• Oil Sampling from Switchgear & Transformers
• Oil Handling, Storage & Disposal
• Practical Demonstrations and Exercises

Course Profile

In recent years more and more emphasis has been placed on matters related to asset management and asset life extension within the power industry. In order to maximise both the periods between maintenance and replacement of costly plant and equipment traditional time-based maintenance techniques are gradually being augmented with a more analytical approach. To enable proper assessment of the condition of oil-filled high voltage switchgear and transformers insulating oil sampling has become one of the main techniques used to enable the recognition of signs of deterioration and imminent failure. Having a thorough understanding of the results gained through oil sampling analysis can help reduce maintenance costs, prevent in-service failure and allow full utilisation of assets throughout their whole life cycle. This course will give attendees a detailed understanding of these techniques by looking at the methodology, analysis, handling, storage, disposal of insulating oil.

Benefits of attending

As a result of attending the course delegates will gain:
• An understanding of the fundamentals of oil analysis
• An understanding of the issues surrounding handling, storage & disposal of insulating oil
• An awareness of the range of technology/techniques in this field
• An ability to assess the options available to electrical distribution engineers and managers
• An appreciation of problems and failure modes associated with switchgear & transformers.

Who should attend?

Professional engineers, graduates, technicians and managers working within the electricity industry and related fields and those with similar interests.

Speakers’ profiles

EA Technology Ltd has played a key role in studying the performance and degradation of oil filled switchgear and transformers. This research work completed at EA Technology and supported by individual RCM studies, revealed that oil condition is the critical factor in determining the condition of the switchgear and the need for maintenance. EA Technology Analytical Limited is a specialist company within the EA Technology Group offering forensic and failure investigations and oil analysis solutions to clients worldwide. Speakers for this course are drawn from the within EA Technology’s Analytical Business, they have been and are still actively involved in all aspects of oil sampling and analysis from a practical and theoretical prospectus, all are experts in this field of work. Through their knowledge of this subject and also their experiences working on failure investigative work, they will be able to talk authoritively on all aspects of this important subject related to the maintenance and asset life extension of high voltage switchgear and transformers.
