An employer owned by its employees

EA Technology is a highly unusual employer, because the company is owned by its staff, who are the majority shareholders. This means that the directors are responsible to the employees themselves for implementing effective training and workforce development programmes.

We are also unusual in that, as a specialist international technology company, our commercial success is closely geared to the skills and expertise of individuals. This is a powerful driver for developing our people.

The effects of this include:

• Staff have a strong personal incentive to develop their own abilities and careers within EA Technology – as well as ensuring the long-term success of the company

• The company invests up to 10% of its resources annually (both in cash terms and management time) in workforce development

• New recruits are actively encouraged to develop their personal abilities and careers within the company

• Company policy is to promote from within, so a remarkably high proportion of senior staff, including directors, have ‘come up through the ranks’

• Staff rewards are industry-leading, including shares

• Staff turnover is extremely low, averaging less than 2% per annum, with an exceptionally high proportion of long-servers

Annual performance reviews

• All staff, including directors, are reviewed each year to establish their personal training and development needs

• Needs are identified on the basis of what support the individual requires to do their job better, to develop their careers – and to benefit the business they work for (we comprise five distinct businesses)

• Personal development plans are agreed between the individual and their business heads, and documented • Each business reviews personal development needs in the light of how they will benefit the individual, the business and EA Technology as a whole

• Each business also reviews the collective needs of its work teams e.g. a group’s requirement to improve their presentation or report writing skills

Training & development programmes

• We spend an average of £150,000 externally on staff training and development – and many times that in terms of internal management resources

• We work with Instep, a Sandbach-based training company, as our preferred supplier of off-the-shelf and individually tailored courses

• We use West Cheshire College for a wide range of courses, including upgrading technical assistants to technical engineers, with ONC and HNC qualifications

• EA Technology is an IET (Institution of Engineering & Technology) Accredited training provider in its own right, providing courses for hundreds of engineers (including our own) from all over the world each year • We support staff studying for MSc and MBA qualifications at Manchester Business School and Liverpool University

• We support staff undertaking a range of courses with the Open University

• Wherever possible, we support staff who want to work from home and/or work flexible hours

• We have been an Investors in People company since 2005

• We encourage people to work and live abroad, with international opportunities including employment at our new offices in Abu Dhabi and China • Under our Inclusion Pillar, we actively support staff engaged in community activities, including sports clubs and charity projects

• We provide a wide range of services for staff at work, including an order-in lunch service, car servicing and valeting services, car pool system, physiotherapy and free health checks

IET Power Academy & other student sponsorships

EA Technology is one of the founding members and continuing sponsors of the IET Power Academy – a successful electricity industry initiative, started four years ago to reverse a drastic decline in the number of electrical engineers graduating from British universities. We sponsor Power Academy students each year on work placement.

We also have five students working with us on a variety of industrial placements and sandwich courses

Personal development examples

• Neil Davies joined EA Technology as a consultant, progressing to senior consultant. He is now Director of our International Business

• Dr Mike Lees started with us as a research officer. He is now our Technical Director

• Dr Jason Tian came to EA Technology as a PhD graduate. He now heads our new office in Shanghai

• Some staff members have set up their own companies within EA Technology, under our Entrepreneurship Programme, and have a personal share in their ownership and success

Effects of active workforce development

• EA Technology has a high proportion of ‘home grown’ qualified staff – many of whom are acknowledged as world experts in their fields

• Our international reputation for expertise and innovation is outstanding - and continuing to grow

• We won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation 2007, for an internationally best selling product, developed in-house

• We attract first class applicants whenever we recruit

• Morale is very high - we gained a Silver Award in 2007 as one of the Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For
