Demand side management 2

With rising power demands on an electricity supply that is becoming increasingly more stretched and reliant upon variable or inflexible low carbon generation, Demand Side Management has an important role to play in balancing loads to match the power available. EA Technology is at the forefront of Demand Side Management, offering a range of specialist services to develop this technology, including:-

  • Review of policy/procedures to ensure DSM is properly considered
  • Feasibility studies of DSM potential for large scale implementation
  • Analysis of the business case/financial justification for DSM projects
  • Assessments of specific network reinforcement projects
  • Expert testing of new DSM technologies
  • Implementation and monitoring of DSM trials and services

Demand Side Management systems switch OFF non-essential equipment for short periods during peaks in electricity demand, to reduce the stress on the electricity distribution network. These short breaks in supply have little effect on the functioning of the equipment, but can make a significant difference to the system load, as well as reducing the carbon footprint.

Similarly, DSM systems can switch ON equipment when excess electricity generation is available to effectively store energy.

However, while there is significant sound science behind the Demand Side Management concept, creating the right technology to make it work, introducing that technology on a large scale and making a sound commercial case for it at both DNO and domestic levels, involves considerable experience and expertise.

EA Technology combines an unrivalled knowledge of power technologies with an in-depth understanding of the electricity supply market and associate regulatory issues. Add in its extensive experience of the behaviour of electricity customers to deliver a unique range of services to drive forward your DSM project.

We can offer an expert and independent perspective that sees the whole picture; not only testing new ideas in the lab and in the field, and modelling the results for large-scale feasibility studies, but also looking at the business case too, including ways to share costs and responsibilities between supplier and consumer.
